After being at a University centered around the enrichment and varied possibilities the camera can produce, I have come in contact with a harsh reality to my own work: I am copying what I know.
While my favorite photographers (Arbus, Tillmas, Parr, Brady, Gearon, Crewdson, di Lorca) all have a certain snapshot quality to them, but their work in the late 80s or even 90s was really hard to push through.
I am struggling to explain that not every photo has an idea before it was taken, some of them come through the visceral intensity of life; we bring our own emotional baggage when looking at a photo.
This journal came to be by looking at my newest dev:
I took this snapshot of people fighting/boxing in front of my apartment in 2009. I love the colors, but when you look close enough everyone is smiling; except the people fighting. You cant see their faces.
My work comes from the after, the before and the current, and I am happy to share my thoughts.
